Subject: One of Monogram's best
For once "Poverty Row" Monogram makes a film that doesn't look cheap and shoddy like its East Side Kids and 9 Lugosi films ("Spooks Run Wild" et al). The same director did some of those as well. This looks almost like a Universal movie. Too bad Lugosi wasn't cast as the villain. He would have been great - and he was at Monogram at the time doing mostly schlock.

Morland's terrific comic relief is the whole show here. He rises above the usual Hollywood stereotype image and is incredibly funny. Never seen him before. He reminded me of Jack Benny's sardonic "Rochester" somewhat. Must find more of his films.

This is a good example of how to make a low-budget film that still has a sleek look and rich atmosphere by paying attention to the small details.

Subject: Fun movie
Very atm ospheric and a lot of fun...mainly because of Mantan Moreland's antics...and, surprisingly, an Oscar nominee for Best Music Score! (Go figure)

Subject: you buy it,pay!
three american guys come chasing after an admiral who hasn't paid for what he's bought, and man he should have just quit while he was ahead.

the three guys of course want you to believe something else, and the whole episode is wrapped up like a modern spy novel with cover stories for all, but take my word for it. after all who's talked to the director about this film lately anyhow? ah hah hah hah.

Subject: Mantan gets zombified!
Good gracious, me! Zombies to the left of him, and zombies to the right of him! What's Mantan Moreland's solution? Join them, and become the leader of a zombie squad! This laugher is Mantan Moreland's movie, and for once he actually gets equal billing in the opening credits. The plot is typical Monogram nonsense about hoo-doo voodoo and zombies controlled by a Nazi spy - in other words, the perfect setting for Mantan Moreland to do his hilarious best. I really love this guy, and have since I saw my first Charlie Chan movie on a nine-inch, black and white TV, and heard my first, "Good gracious, me!" P.S. Thanks for the smaller download!
